It features a tortise shell/silver/and brass outer case, a fine silver body and decorative case, 3-tier original crystal, rose-gold hands, champleve' dial with arabic and roman numberal numbers, fusee and chain drive. It is shown being wound and ticking, then assembled in its decorative silver case with Greco Roman figures and then put into its protective outer tortise shell case. This watch is one of the earliest two handed watches and would have only been able to have been owned by the most wealthy of persons at the time. It was built at the same time Sir Isaac Newton was a professon at Cambridge and Johann Sebastian Bach was composing music in Germany. Mechanical Watch Complications - The Date Function

Among horologists, complications are not the slightly irritating or unpleasant problems which many of us face on a regular basis - such as a flat pack with an encyclopedic instruction manual, or a washing machine with enough settings to confuse even the most mechanically minded of persons. While, by definition, to complicate something means to make it more difficult or, well, complicated, this is usually perceived to be a bad thing.

As far as horologists are concerned when creating a watch, to add a complication adds value. Making a watch more 'complicated' means to add functions beyond a record of minutes, hours and seconds; such as a date function. This feature is not necessary to tell the time of day, but its inclusion does two positive things. Firstly, the wearer can see at a glance what the date is, and secondly, the skill required to create the complication demonstrates the watchmaker's ability. For a date function, there are several levels of complication that can be included.

For example, the days of the week and months of the year follow in in an endless, unbroken cycle, and are easy to denote. Deciding whether to display them or not relies primarily on the aesthetics of the watch.

The simplest date function can simply show which day of the month it is with a number in a window. A round disk numbered 1-31 is placed beneath the dial, and after every 24 hours, the dial 'jumps' forward one number. But not every month is the same length. A basic date function, therefore, will need to be reset at the end of all the months shorter than 31 days.

A more advanced date function would 'know' which months were shorter, and could skip the extra days so that it didn't need resetting five times a year; at the start of March, May, July, October and December. There is still, however, the problem of leap years. Date watches of this level require adjusting every leap year, as they cannot account for the extra, 29th, day in February.

A perpetual calendar watch has one of the most prestigious date complications of all. The calendar function in these watches have been designed to allow for the leap year, and record the extra day in February that occurs every four years. Resetting them should the watch stop, however, is a long process, so it's important to keep the watch running.

The other, final hurdle for a perpetual watch is that the Gregorian calendar that the world follows actually has a four hundred year cycle, rather than the four-year one that most people suppose. This means that in the years 2100, 2200 and 2300, there will be no leap year as there 'should be', and perpetual calendar watches will need to be returned to the manufacturer to be adjusted.

One watch manufacturer, however, has overcome this hurdle - Patek Philippe produces a perpetual calendar that truly lives up to its name. One of the world's slowest mechanisms counts out the cycle, and can remind the watch to skip its usual leap year three centuries out of four. To date, Patek Philippe's Calibre 89 movement is the only watch mechanism capable of achieving such a feat.
